About HBOB
The Honda Battle of the Bands was created to celebrate, support and recognize the excellence of Black college marching bands and the unique academic experience offered by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Honda annually awards more than $200,000 in grants to participating marching bands during the program period. We are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Honda Battle of the Bands, and we look forward to seeing you there.

There are two components to the Honda Battle of the Bands:

1.

Honda Battle of the Bands Celebration Tour, presented by Verizon

(September through November 2011)

2.

Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase

At the end of the Celebration Tour, eight bands advance to the Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase. The Invitational Showcase features musical performances from these eight HBCU marching bands.

Save the date! The 2012 Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase will be held on January 28, 2012 at the Georgia Dome. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the show starts promptly at 3:00 p.m.

When can I purchase a ticket for the 2012 event?

Tickets are on sale now! For more information visit www.hondabattleofthebands.com

When does voting end?

Voting for the 2012 Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase ends October 12, 2011 at midnight EST.

Why aren't all the schools from each conference listed in the section "The Bands"?

All HBCU marching bands are invited to participate in the 2011-2012 Honda Battle of the Bands program. The schools listed in each conference are the bands that have elected to participate this year.

How are the seating arrangements handled? Is it first-come, first-served or do tickets come with assigned seating? Also, what is the best section to sit in to view the competition?

Seats are reserved. Tickets are $10 for upper bowl seats and $12 for lower bowl seats. We choreograph the show so that everyone has a good view and we make sure that the music, excitement and exhilaration are there for all.

What is required in order for the bands to participate in the competition? Are bands required to perform certain musical pieces, routines, etc.? Is the performance scoring based on points per category?

HBOB is a showcase, not a competition, so there are no particular requirements. Creativity, character and showmanship are up to each individual band.

Is this Honda event going to be televised?

We won’t be televising this event, but from September to November 2011, you can check out the website for clips of your favorite bands along with highlights from the 2011 Invitational Showcase.

How are the bands selected?

The Honda Battle of the Bands program includes two components -- the Road to the Honda, which runs September through November, and the Invitational Showcase.

The selection process for the Invitational Showcase is based on a two voting-level process.

In Voting Level 1, three bands are selected at large:
a. Online Opinion Poll from hondabattleofthebands.com – Top three bands receiving highest fan votes in online poll

In Voting Level 2, one school from each of the four conferences, plus an independent program, are selected for a total of five bands. These schools are selected in a three-part process:
a. Online Opinion Poll at hondabattleofthebands.com -- 1/3 weight
b. Band Directors’ Votes -- 1/3 weight
c. Presidents’ Votes -- 1/3 weight

Note: Presidents and Band Directors are not permitted to vote for their own institution in either voting level.

Who won the 2011 Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase?

In our program everyone who participates is a winner. The audience benefits from a unique and exciting display of different music and performance styles.

When will HBOB showcase the best high school bands? I think it would be appropriate to let them perform in this event.

The uniqueness of the Honda Battle of the Bands is that it focuses on the various styles and excellence exhibited by the HBCU marching bands. We feel that our production should focus on colleges.

Is there a DVD of this event?

Unfortunately, there is no 2012 Honda Battle of the Bands DVD planned this year. Video and pictures from the showcase will be available online after January 30, 2012.
